Major depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders and can cause significant impairments in daily function, such as at work, school or home life. Up to 20% of Americans suffer from major depressive symptoms. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. It is characterized by persistent symptoms of depression/sadness and/or loss of interest or pleasure in doing things; along with changes in appetite, sleep, energy level, concentration, feelings of worthlessness and/or suicidal thoughts. Men and women can experience depression differently.
Some men with depression may be more likely to show anger or aggression whereas women may show sadness or be tearful. Those with depression may be more likely to lose interest at work, home or with activities they used to enjoy.
